Maher’s Abortion Comments, Trump Trial Underway, House Aid Packages

April 17, 2024

Satan is so much more in earnest than we are--he buys up the opportunity while we are wondering how much it will cost.

Maher is Okay with Murder

Bill Maher has gone viral for his comments on Donald Trump, Republicans, and abortion in a panel discussion earlier this week. He is quoted criticizing Republicans, Trump in particular, for maintaining inconsistent positions about abortion. While he did say he could respect the convictions of pro-life “absolutists,” he finds himself comfortable with the murderous reality of abortion. Maher’s most direct comments stunned the crowd and panelists when he said, “…there’s 8 billion people in the world. I’m sorry we won’t miss you.”

Bill Maher's honesty, while shocking to even his pro-choice friends and offensive to sensible ears, is refreshingly necessary (Proverbs 24:26). Maher has the courage to "say the quiet part" out loud. His statement that the "absolutist" position is the only logical conviction "worth respecting" exposes the platitudes, weaknesses, and evil that exist within both the leftist "pro-choice" community and the compromised, fearful "almost pro-life" world. God's word does not allow us to have convictions of convenience (2 Timothy 4:2 NET) or that are politically expedient (Jeremiah 1:17-18). The Lord expects us to be full of grace AND Truth, just as His son was (John 1:14). The righteous love the mom, love the child, love the Truth, and are unaffected by criticism, name-calling, or intimidation (Psalm 37:1-3). Isaiah tells us that one of the signs of judgment on a land is that "the godly perish, and no one cares. Honest people disappear, and no one minds that the godly disappear because of evil" (Isaiah 57:1 NET). Maher's comment, though "harsh," as Pierce Morgan quickly pointed out, is at least honest. What is not honest is that we have been pretending for decades like a holocaust is not happening in our midst. People have been disappearing because of the abortion holocaust for decades. Maher was simply honest enough to say it. As Maher said, pro-life people don't "hate women"- that is made up. What is not made up is that truly pro-abundant life people love all people at all stages of development, irrespective of ethnicity or socio-economic background. What should not be made up is that all who know and want to honor Christ are unified in the "absolutist position" and that the remnant is ready to stand firm in their convictions, irrespective of the consequences of their love (1 Corinthians 13:5-7).

As I write this, I am praying that God blesses Bill Maher and others who share his views with the ability to see that our indifference to murder and sin is going to be more expensive than we could possibly imagine (2 Thessalonians 1:8-10).

Let's stop telling ourselves we would have done more to abolish the slave trade or stop the Nazis and their "final solution" had we been alive - let's get busy living and speaking faithfully in ours (1 Corinthians 16:13-14).

Trump Trial Underway

Former President Donald Trump's historic criminal trial began in New York, marking the first instance of a former president facing such charges. Trump faces 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records, allegedly to conceal damaging information for the 2016 presidential election. The trial, anticipated to last between six and eight weeks, commenced with jury selection, a process estimated to take up to two weeks due to the extensive scrutiny of potential jurors. Over half of the initial panel expressed an inability to be impartial. However, they ended Day 2 with several jurors sworn in by Judge Juan Merchan. Despite legal troubles, Trump's fundraising rhetoric portrays trials as politically motivated "witch hunts," although a conviction may impact independent voters.

In the midst of this historic trial, let us remember the ultimate Judge who presides over all of history's proceedings (Psalm 9:8). While human courts may deliberate, it is the divine courtroom where truth finds its eternal verdict (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Amidst the political theater, let us fix our gaze on the One who reigns with righteousness, whose moral clarity surpasses all human endeavors. For it is not in the halls of power where true justice resides, but in the sovereign will of God (Psalm 33:10-11).

Remember, the trial of earthly rulers pales in comparison to the impending return of the King of Kings (Revelation 19:16). Let us not be swayed by the rhetoric of the moment but instead find assurance in the unchanging truth of Scripture (Isaiah 40:8). In God's courtroom, truth prevails, and His judgment stands firm for eternity (Psalm 19:9).

House to Split Aid Packages

Speaker Mike Johnson is facing resistance from Republicans as he attempts to push legislation through the House for aid to Israel and Ukraine. His strategy involves breaking down the aid package into separate pieces to accommodate varying opinions within the House, but it's met with opposition, including a bid to remove him from his post led by some Republicans. Despite the challenges, Johnson remains determined to proceed, emphasizing the urgency of passing the aid package for national security interests, even as he faces the prospect of needing Democratic support to advance the legislation.

The wise know that there are times to be uncompromising in your beliefs, convictions, and ambitions (Proverbs 21:23, Romans 12:2James 4:4). The wise also know that there is a time to strategically seek unity for the sake of the common good. If that is what Mike Johnson is doing here, then we applaud his shrewd diplomacy (Matthew 10:16, Proverbs 11:14).

Our nation should prioritize action domestically and internationally that safeguards our citizenry, borders, and livelihoods; while we cannot speak to national security interests at stake, we do know men in Washington desperately need discernment and wisdom from above (James 3:17) as they govern, spend and send money, and seek to prosper our nation. Pray for him and our leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2
