Tik Tok Ban, Weinstein Trial, Kanye Venture

Repentance is not just the start of the Christian life; it is the Christian life.

Harvey Weinstein Retrial

The New York Court of Appeals overturned Harvey Weinstein's 2020 rape conviction, citing improper testimony and suggesting a retrial, triggering mixed reactions from #MeToo advocates and dissenting judges. Weinstein, facing a separate conviction in California, will remain in prison while the ruling renews discussions on sexual misconduct cases and the admissibility of evidence. Some experts see parallels between this reversal and similar high-profile cases, highlighting the ongoing legal debates surrounding sexual assault prosecutions and the use of prior bad acts as evidence.

Nothing about today’s ruling made a case for Weinstein’s innocence; it simply established the court’s opinion that there should be a retrial on the basis of a technicality. There will be no need, or opportunities granted, for such appeals before the Divine court (Deuteronomy 32:4). No technicality will overturn righteous judgments by a perfect Judge (Ecclesiastes 3:17). His decisions will be final and without blemish (Daniel 7:10-11). Until then, victims of injustice will have to endure imperfect systems and unrighteous judgments (Ecclesiastes 3:16) as they are part of the ‘trouble’ our Lord has told us (John 16:33) we will have to endure in our imperfect world. Until the day of redemption, all creatures, including us, and all creation, including our justice system, will have to wait with groaning for the perfect to return (Romans 8:20-22).

While we wait for perfect justice to come, we can pray that Weinstein seeks forgiveness for his abusive behavior and that his victims find healing to the point where they find peace and the ability to forgive as Christ has offered forgiveness to them for their shortcomings before Him (Matthew 6:12).

Bye Bye TikTok

President Biden signed a law threatening to ban Chinese-owned TikTok within a year unless sold, heightening the US-China tech conflict. The law's inclusion in a bill providing foreign aid for select countries accelerates TikTok's deadline to divest, reflecting Washington's increasing pressure on the platform over national security concerns. While some argue TikTok's Chinese ownership jeopardizes American security and privacy, others contend that broader tech industry issues warrant comprehensive legislation rather than targeting a single platform.

TikTok, and all social media, is a threat to us, with or without nefarious security backdoors, depending on how we use and interact with them. Our government and leaders rightly discern the threat to our national and personal security (Romans 13:3), as we should personally discern the threat to the meditations of our heart (Proverbs 4:23, Psalm 19:14), the reflections of our mind (Psalm 101:3-4, Romans 12:1-2, Matthew 6:22), and the consumption of our time (Proverbs 12:27).

While there may be some “secrecy” to the access TikTik gives to “unfriendly” governments/agencies, It is no secret that the minds and money behind social media are committed to capturing and keeping your attention and time… an exhaustible resource that belongs first and most to the Lord (Matthew 6:33, Proverbs 3:9, Psalm 1:2-3).

Kanye’s Latest Venture

Kanye West is back in the news again after hinting at plans to launch an adult entertainment studio. Reports suggest West and his partners are in advanced talks to establish a pornography brand under the Yeezy parent company. Despite West's past public affiliations with porn and his tumultuous personal and professional life, representatives for him have not responded to inquiries about the potential venture.

No external link included intentionally, read at your own discretion.

If the reports about this latest business venture (and unfortunately, in our world, it is a tragically profitable one) are true, and Kanye’s social media activity may imply so, then we are grieved. Not just grieved for Kanye, who has gone on the record saying, “porn destroyed my family,” but grieved for those who will undoubtedly be devastated by the production, participation in, and/or consumption of this work (2 Peter 2:19, Proverbs 6:25-28).

Kanye has had an erratic public life, but at one point has professed to be a follower of Jesus. His own social media posts and public comments would suggest that he is, like all of us, at war with the flesh, and at this moment, he is losing a costly battle that will surely impact more people than he could probably imagine (James 1:15, Ephesians 4:19). Sin takes you further than you want to go, will keep you longer than you want to stay, and will cost you more than you want to pay. Pray that Kanye would remember the bitter taste sin left in his mouth not that long ago (Jeremiah 4:18) and that he would turn (back) to the only place true life is found (Psalm 16:11).

If pornography is a regular struggle, addiction, or temptation in your life, then there is nothing more productive for you to do at this moment than to text or call a trusted friend, confess (1 John 1:9), pray (James 5:16), invite accountability (Galatians 6:1-3), and cut off that which “leads you to sin” (Matthew 5:29-30, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4). There is freedom from sin’s slavery (Romans 6:18), healing from addiction (1 Corinthians 10:13), and redemption in purity (Galatians 1:4, Philippians 1:9-11) available to you in Jesus. Do not wait until it “destroys your family,” don’t let it destroy your intimacy with the Lord today.
