Three US Soldiers Killed
Three American service members were killed and over two dozen individuals injured in a drone strike launched by Iranian-backed militants in Jordan. This marks the first U.S. troop casualties since the Israel-Hamas conflict. The Pentagon pledged a robust response, raising the likelihood of escalation. U.S. forces have been facing repeated attacks in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen by Iranian-backed groups. The attack breaks two years of relative calm for U.S. forces, with the previous major assault occurring at Kabul airport in 2021.
Just as we have discussed Israel's right to defend itself against evil, it's equally true that the U.S. has that same right (and responsibility). The Lord takes no pleasure in death, even of the wicked β His desire is for all to repent and live (Ezekiel 18:32). The remnant should share this same perspective (Ephesians 5:1) even while acknowledging there is a time for governments to "bear the sword" (Romans 13:4). While there is a "time for war," (Ecclesiastes 3:7-8) we should never delight in it, be eager to run toward it, (Proverbs 17:14) or be unwilling to execute it fully (1 Peter 2:14).
All authorities are established by God (Romans 13:1), and subject to experience consequences for the behavior of their nation-states and military. That is true of President Joe Biden and Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran. Let's mourn with those families who are grieving profound losses and pray for our President and his advisors as they face this latest attack in the Middle East (Romans 12:15, 1 Timothy 2:1-2).

Ohio Pastor Sues City
Pastor Chris Avell of Dad's Place church in Bryan, Ohio, is suing the city for ordering him to stop sheltering homeless people at his church, alleging a violation of his religious beliefs. Avell claims city officials harassed him to evict the homeless, while his attorney argues that instead of prosecuting, the city should support the church's efforts to help the marginalized. Dad's Place has been open 24/7 since March 2023, accommodating around eight people nightly. The city contends the church, located in a central business zoning district, violates fire codes and has seen incidents of overdoses, thefts, and sexual assaults. Officials seek to stop the church from housing the homeless, while Avell pleads not guilty to zoning violations, with a trial scheduled for February 9.
As is evidenced by statements in this story, there is a lot more going on than a pastor and the church he leads being charged for caring for the homeless (Proverbs 18:13). Good laws, which include zoning restrictions, exist to protect public health and promote public safety, both of which are good for human flourishing. As long as laws are not punitive toward or targeted to restrict faith organizations without a "compelling governmental interest," there is no constitutional or biblical concern. People of faith should not expect special treatment but should live especially exemplary lives (1 Peter 3:15-16). Nothing prevents the members of this church from welcoming the marginalized into their individual homes or from caring for people within their community facility as long as they operate consistently with other businesses and property owners in the city. We can't be glad the church wants all people to "experience the love and truth of Jesus, regardless of the time of day," but they should not expect special treatment as they go about it (1 Peter 2:16-17).
