What’s Next for Biden?
Throughout the weekend, several major news outlets published pieces calling upon President Biden to step down from the 2024 race. The NYTimes Editorial Board pointed out Biden's weak debate performance against Trump, indicating the need for fresh Democratic leadership. They stated, "As it stands, the president is engaged in a reckless gamble," emphasizing that while Biden is preferred over Trump, fresh leadership is needed to ensure victory.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Editorial Board echoed this sentiment, arguing Biden should pass the torch to prevent Trump's return. They criticized Biden for failing to convey a coherent vision, stating, "This wasn't a bad night; it was confirmation of the worst fears... age has finally caught up to him." Responses from Kamala Harris and Barack Obama doubling down their defenses of Biden were seen as dismissive of legitimate concerns.
While not the only major outlets to publish this sentiment, it is significant that these were not just opinion pieces by individuals, but rather editorials from the Editorial Boards – voices representing the journalistic institutions.
When faced with a politically charged story like this one, it's tempting to respond from a political lens rather than a biblical perspective. The remnant knows better.
First, mocking the elderly is not just impolite; it is unchristian. The people of God have always respected the elderly among them (Leviticus 19:32, 1 Timothy 5:1-2). Likewise, the people of God have been commanded to pray for those in positions of authority (1 Timothy 2:1-4). Such principles and commands are not insignificant (Matthew 5:19). Neglecting them diminishes our role as salt and light in a world veering towards decay and darkness (Matthew 5:13-16).
Second, this respect does not mean they can't be disagreed with or challenged, especially when their policies fundamentally conflict with a biblical worldview (Acts 5:29). Nor does it mean that telltale signs of diminished mental capacity should be ignored in order for one's own political party to remain in power. True respect entails caring for the elderly rather than exploiting them.
Lastly, perhaps most troubling, is the apparent surprise among elected officials, media figures, and some of the public at the displayed decline during the recent debate. This comes after much of the elite media class have spent the past 3.5 years shielding Biden from criticism and telling the public to not believe their lying eyes. (For sample evidence, here's a 3-minute montage of this with the vast majority of clips being from the past couple weeks and months).
Sometimes the principle of "you reap what you sow" can be seen played out in real-time (Galatians 6:7-8). Regardless of the outcome, all should agree this situation is far from ideal, and our leaders need continued prayers, irrespective of our political affiliations.

Conservative Gains in France
Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) party achieved historic gains in France's parliamentary election, winning around 34% of the vote in the first round, according to exit polls. This result represents a significant setback for President Emmanuel Macron, whose alliance received between 20.5%-23% of the vote. The outcome leaves the question of whether the RN can form a government unresolved, as political dealmaking among rival parties will be crucial in the days leading up to the second-round run-off. The RN's performance highlights voter dissatisfaction with Macron and increasing concerns over immigration and the cost of living.
Sooner or later, people tire of irresponsible leaders doing irresponsible things (2 Kings 12:20). Economic trouble, riots, evaporating law and order, and loss of national identity all increase despair and desperation. During times of chaos and crisis, people are more willing to follow leaders of questionable character (Judges 9:1-6) or who might otherwise come from different leadership “family trees” (1 Kings 12:2-6).
While individuals are responsible for their individual choices, the Lord is always working to accomplish His purposes, and they will not be thwarted (1 Kings 19:15-17).
It is a wise people who wholeheartedly pay attention to the Lord (2 Chronicles 16:9) and appoint leaders who model faithfulness to the Him (Deuteronomy 1:13-15).
A people’s peace is always found in trusting in a good and sovereign God irrespective of the leadership over them, but when citizens of a land get the opportunity to influence who those leaders might be, they should take advantage of the moment and do what they can to elect good men. If you vote for bramble, don’t be surprised to get stuck with thorns (Judges 9:14).
