Trump Assassination Attempt

Trump Injured in Assassination Attempt

Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. As he spoke, gunshots rang out; Trump appeared to grab his ear and drop to the ground; Secret Service agents swiftly shielded him. Trump rose and was quickly escorted off stage, appearing to have suffered a wound to the ear. At least one attendee was killed, and two spectators were critically injured. Posting on social media, Trump described hearing shots and feeling a bullet graze his ear. The shooter, firing from an elevated position, was killed by Secret Service agents. The incident, occurring just months before the presidential election, underscores the heightened political tensions in the U.S. President Joe Biden, roughly two hours after the assassination attempt, condemned the violence, emphasizing its unacceptability in American society.

What happened Saturday, President Trump being hit only in the ear from 100m, was miraculous. Events like this don't just happen, they are orchestrated by a sovereign God who oversees everything (Proverbs 16:33). Donald Trump's immediate response to the attempt on his life was courageous and close to perfect. His immediate call to "fight, fight, fight" is impressive in the face of an attempt on his life, but be wary of what it is that you fight for. Paul tells us what the remnant should fight for, and it involves no compromise. “Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses” (1 Timothy 6:12).

"Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." (Romans 12:21). This attempt on President Trump's life was evil. The murder of the father who heroically dove on the members of his family is evil. But we cannot be a nation, a political party, or a people who view this incredible act of evil as a license to react in kind. We are called to rise above base acts of evil and stand against an increasing tide aiming to wash us away into hate.

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits" (Proverbs 18:21). The attempted assassination of President Trump is the latest evidence that our nation is reaping what it has sown and feasting on the fruit of angry, violent, inflammatory rhetoric and living (Galatians 6:7). With a mainstream media having dedicated news cycle after news cycle to equivocate Trump with a dictator, or even Hitler, it is no shock that confused, albeit mentally unstable individuals would feel some sort of responsibility or entitlement to attempt to annihilate this "threat to democracy." We must condemn sin; therefore, we must condemn false witness—particularly when it is in the effort to curry favor with or manipulate voters (Exodus 20:16). No political victory is worth the cost of human life (Matthew 16:26).

The United States better take heed, lest we begin to look more like our neighbor to the south who endured 37 assassinations in their last election cycle. We must take heed lest we believe that what we are watching does not require our close attention and discerning minds. We can rejoice that Donald Trump's life was spared, but we cannot afford to forget that our nation faces a grim reality under the current circumstances. We are not a nation who has remembered God as our Lord (Deuteronomy 8:19). As we watch these events and coming trouble (John 16:33, 2 Timothy 3:13) continue to unfold, be slow to celebrate anything the Lord does not celebrate (Ephesians 5:11). Be quick to trust in our King, who is surely coming and promises to recompense each according to their deeds (Revelation 22:12)

God is opposed to arrogant people, arrogant nations, and arrogant leaders (Isaiah 13). God is opposed to those who exalt themselves and do not honor Him (Isaiah 14:13-16). America is compromised not because our two candidates for president are but because the remnant, the church of Jesus Christ in America, is compromised in its convictions that it should FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT for the righteousness of Christ in all things. The world and America are closer to the events described in Isaiah 13-16 than it is to Isaiah 2. The church should be involved in politics, but as long as members of Jesus' church are more vociferous about who people should vote for in November than they are about how they should fully respond to the gospel, we should be bracing for judgment, not jubilation, irrespective of election results.

Be on the alert, stand firm, do everything in love (1 Corinthians 16:13-14), do not be ruled by fear (2 Timothy 1:7), do not make idols or be tempted to look to anyone but Christ as a Savior (Isaiah 42:8), study the Scriptures (2 Timothy 2:15), be ready (1 Kings 20:11), and be faithful (Psalm 37:3).
