Hot Dog Competition Beef
Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi, famed rivals in competitive eating, will face off in a live Netflix special on September 2, 2024. Chestnut, a 16-time Nathan's hot dog-eating champion, won't compete in this year's Nathan's contest due to an exclusivity issue with Major League Eating, possibly tied to a deal with Impossible Foods. Netflix's event, titled "Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef," marks their first showdown since 2009. Chestnut disputes Nathan's decision to exclude him, claiming it robs fans of their holiday entertainment. New York Mayor Eric Adams urged a resolution. This Netflix special is part of the streamer's push into live sports, including upcoming NFL and WWE events.
For a multitude of reasons, we are confident no one will be praying, "Lord, please bless this food to the nourishment of our bodies" before this competition, though undoubtedly, we should all offer up a prayer for the digestive systems of those involved. Clearly, this is not what the Lord had in mind when He told the enemy, "Man shall not live by bread alone" (Matthew 4:4).
While all the above is tongue-in-cheek, this silliness provides us an opportune moment to reflect on greater truths. We are called to use food and drink as a way to honor God with our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 1 Corinthians 10:31), and our Lord's example teaches us to seek higher nourishment than bread alone (Deuteronomy 8:3). Spiritual food sustains us far better than a hot dog (or 76 dogs in 10 minutes) ever could (John 6:27), and finally, Jesus is the bread of life, and whoever comes to Him will never go hungry (John 6:35). It is impossible to be gluttonous when it comes to abiding and dining with Jesus (Revelation 3:20).
But let's be careful not to be so pious that we deny others some light-hearted fun (Proverbs 17:22). While we have to be mindful of waste and always remember that our world is filled with too many of the Lord's children who lack proper nourishment, this event is not the reason "the poor will always be with you" (Mark 14:7). So go ahead and enter a pie eating contest yourself this summer season, but don't miss your chance to bite off your piece of the pie when it comes to caring for those who can only dream about eating so much that Netflix thinks its worth watching (Galatians 2:10).

Lia Thomas’ Appeal Denied
Lia Thomas's attempt to appeal the World Aquatics ban on transgender women has been denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). Thomas, a biological male, challenged the restrictions barring trans women who transitioned after male puberty from competing in women's categories. The CAS ruled that Thomas, not being an active member of USA Swimming or registered with World Aquatics, was ineligible to engage in such competitions. World Aquatics welcomed the decision, reinforcing its commitment to fairness in women's sports and highlighting that testosterone suppression alone does not eliminate biological advantages from male puberty.
When logic, reason, and truth persist over unreasonable, unscientific, unloving cultural demands, it is worth celebrating. The CAS has made a wise ruling. Lia (born William) continues to, like many, seek purpose, validation, and life apart from the only place he will find it (Isaiah 53:6, Proverbs 14:12). While the world claims to show life-saving love and acceptance towards people with gender dysphoria, they fail to see a path where life-saving love and truth intersect (1 John 3:18). The church, the true church, cannot afford to make the same mistake. God’s people must continually strive to walk the path of truth-filled love while compassionately responding to those struggling with their God-given sex and identity. As Lia faces the wrath of the “right” as (one of) the face(s) of “insanity” or “what is wrong with the world,” may he find, among God’s people, a love that reminds him of who he truly is (Genesis 1:27).
