Irish Amendments Fail, Boeing Scandal, Princess of Wales

Irish Vote No

In a surprising turn of events, Irish voters rejected two proposed constitutional amendments, marking a significant milestone in the nation's referendum history. The rejection, which saw the highest ever no-vote percentage in an Irish referendum, came despite Ireland's recent progressive shifts, including the legalization of same-sex marriage and abortion. The first proposed amendment aimed to redefine the concept of family in Ireland, expanding it beyond traditional blood relationships to include any relationship based on mutual devotion. The second amendment sought to remove language from the Irish Constitution related to the role of mothers in the home, particularly emphasizing their duties and the state's recognition of their contribution. Prime Minister Leo Varadkar expressed disappointment, declaring the rejection a setback.

As God's word makes clear (Deuteronomy 4:25-27) and John Paul II perfectly summarized, "As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live." Societal norms shift, and political winds blow to and fro, but timeless truth remains forever (Isaiah 40:8). The family, as designed by God (Genesis 2:24) will forever be the cornerstone of a healthy civilization (Psalm 128, Deuteronomy 4:40). It is the job of the remnant to not "add to the Word" or "take away from it" (Deuteronomy 4:2), to resist conforming to the course of the world (Romans 12:2), and not be "taken captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ" (Colossians 2:8).

While Ireland has already capitulated in other areas regarding morality and the value of life, it is a good thing that, in this instance, they have refused to redefine what it means to be a family unit or to degrade the value of women in their role as mothers (Ecclesiastes 7:23-25).

Any land which continues to elevate the importance of strong, present, faithful women in the home is a land that will find benefits that reach far beyond mere economic growth and GDP expansion; it will be a land that will be filled with children that will rise up, call blessed and sing the praises of not only their mothers (Proverbs 31:28), but their motherland (Psalm 16:6).

In a day increasingly filled with arrogance and the absurdity which accompanies it, it is appropriate to say, when progressives are discouraged, a nation is making progress (Jeremiah 6:16).

Boeing Failures

In the wake of an incident where a panel blew off an Alaska Airlines plane in January, a federal audit has revealed extensive failures at Boeing. The FAA's investigation uncovered 33 failures and 97 points of noncompliance. Key supplier Spirit AeroSystems also fell short, with seven out of thirteen audit points failed, notably due to improper maintenance materials.

Further complicating matters, videos on Twitter revealed Boeing employees expressing reluctance to fly on planes they assemble. And to make the story muddier, whistleblower John Barnett, who was set to testify about Boeing's operational issues, was found dead in an apparent suicide on Saturday. The unsettling discoveries highlight an urgent need for reform within Boeing and raise serious safety concerns in aviation.

Excellence honors God and inspires others (Matthew 5:16). Nothing about Boeing's recent news stories highlights "excellence", which, in turn, leaves no one "inspired", many skeptical, and travelers, potentially unsafe. The Lord calls His people to accomplish every task in life for His glory and His glory alone (1 Corinthians 10:31). Accomplishing things for the glory of God requires us to work heartily for the Lord (Colossians 3:23), to be a model of good works (Titus 2:7), to remain above reproach (1 Timothy 3:2), and to cultivate trust (Luke 16:10). It is the excellent life, defined by an "extraordinary spirit" that draws attention and separates God's people from the mundane and mediocre (Daniel 6:3).

Boeing's apparent propensity to "cut corners" and refusal to stay grounded in the wisdom of a biblical work ethic has led to the necessary grounding of hundreds of their planes (Proverbs 18:9).

May Boeing's sloppy work be a sober reminder to us all that when men are not faithful in their work, the only thing that travels is trouble (Hosea 8:7).

Princess of Wales Missing?

Princess Kate, future Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, has created quite a stir following controversy after a photo was shared by Kensington Palace for Mother's Day. Major photo agencies deemed the image manipulated and issued "kill notices" to prevent their outlets from publishing it. The following day, an apology was posted by the Prince and Princess of Wales' account for "amateur" edits made by Kate herself. The Princess' absence from public view since Christmas, attributed to planned abdominal surgery, sparked conspiracy theories questioning the transparency of the palace's statements and the severity of her condition. Kate's uncharacteristic disappearance and the lack of concrete information surrounding her health have led to heightened scrutiny and speculation and led to viral conspiracy theories populating the internet and social media.

While we can all agree that an unhealthy amount of attention is given to ‘royals,’ societal elites, and entertainers (see Monday’s comments on the Oscars), we have an easy and necessary lesson before us when it comes to the world’s growing obsession over an absent “queen in waiting.”

First, while the world obsesses and speculates about the reason for the Princess of Wales’ absence from public life, God’s people have no such option (1 Thessalonians 4:7). Gossip is the sport of fools, innuendo, and speculation are the folly of the fallen (2 Timothy 3:1-4) and we are to avoid “such men as these” who have a “form of Godliness but deny its power” (2 Timothy 3:5).

Tabloids and tweets should not be our entertainment tonight or tomorrow (Proverbs 26:22). We are to “set our minds on the things above” (Colossians 3:2), not follow the world in its infatuations with those the world elevates above us. We can hope Kate’s absence from public life is nothing more than a needed recovery from her reported health issues, but we must avoid the unhealthy obsession of those who have no life except to spread contention as they whisper and gossip about others (Proverbs 26:20).

Secondly, there is something telling about people wanting to know where the ‘royals’ are or what they are up to. When a nation’s ‘royalty’ is missing, a scandal is afoot, and the greatest scandal in England (and the rest of the known world) is not a photoshopped picture of a princess and her children, but rather it is an absent, unnoticed and largely irrelevant royal priesthood that God has intended be bright and shining stars in the midst of a dark and perverse generation (Philippians 2:15). A nation which loses its nobles is a nation that is lost and under judgment (Isaiah 3:1-5).

What our world needs today is true leadership that can say with integrity, “imitate me as I imitate Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1), not celebrities that say imitate me as I live a life of privilege. The good news for the commoner is that while not everyone can be born into a family of blue blood, everyone can be born again through the blood of the Son of God (Ephesians 2:13) that makes children of wrath (Ephesians 2:3), heirs of a divine nature by a royal promise (2 Peter 1:4).

That is news worth obsessing over and spreading throughout the Kingdom (Romans 1:16).
