Terrorist Attack in Russia
Last Friday night, a terrorist attack at the Crocus City complex near Moscow during a concert by the band Picnic resulted in over 130 deaths and more than 100 injuries. Armed assailants stormed the venue, fired indiscriminately at the crowd, and caused chaos as concertgoers sought cover. ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack. Russian authorities also suggested possible involvement by Ukraine, which received international condemnation.
Friday marked a change in verbiage from the Kremlin, declaring Russia was “in a state of war; up until this point, they referred to the conflict in Ukraine as a “special military operation.”
Another day, another tragic reminder that we live in a fallen world filled with fallen men, sin, and sorrow (Isaiah 3:11).
It has always been true that every day is a gift, and we can not presume that tomorrow will be ours whether we live today in Moscow, Munich, or Montana (Psalm 90:10-12). It has always been true that worrying tomorrow will be the day when horrors swiftly come upon us will not prevent trouble from coming our way; it will only bring trouble to our today (Matthew 6:34). It has always been true that wise men make peace with the Lord while they can lest they die unexpectedly (Luke 13:2-5) and face the judgment which we are all told we should expect (Ecclesiastes 12:12-13).
Today is not the day to fret; it leads only to evil doing (Psalm 37:8). Today is the day to share with others the source of your peace (John 14:27) and to comfort others in their distress (2 Corinthians 1:4) as they rightly observe the chaos in the world. Today is the day to busy ourselves with the work of steadfast gospel proclamation (Romans 1:16), not bury our heads in the shifting sand of fear.
Today is also a good day to equip yourself with the ability to answer the question, “Why doesn’t God stop mass shootings and terrorists?” which I have answered for you here.

Apple Antitrust Lawsuit
The US Justice Department and over a dozen states filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, alleging monopolistic practices in the smartphone market, arguing it harms competition, innovation, and consumer prices. Apple denies the allegations, asserting they threaten technological advancement and consumer-friendly products. The lawsuit seeks to bar Apple from using its app store to block innovative apps and prevent integration with competing technologies, potentially changing its business model.
As believers, faith should impact every area of our lives, even (and especially) our occupations. Believers should wisely and prayerfully seek obedience to the Word and the common good of mankind even to the “detriment” of their own “profit” or “personal gain,” for believers know where their reward lies (Matthew 5:12) and should adamantly seek to store up treasure in heaven and not on earth (Matthew 6:19-20). We must also be keenly aware of the warning in Mark 8:34-38 and guard against efforts that gain us the world but cost us our souls. Faithfulness and financial success do not need to be mutually exclusive, but there is a path, often more lucrative, to riches that forsakes obedience for opportunity, and this is not the way of the remnant (Proverbs 13:11).
It is the job of the government to restrain evil wherever it shows itself, whether that be in a secular company or a secular man. Apple should have the right to defend itself and make a case that it has acted appropriately. Until men are delivered from the sin that exists in our nature, we will need governments to restrain evil on Wall Street, in Silicon Valley, and within each of us. The job of the government is to prosecute unrighteousness, promote what is righteous, and protect the common good. When you have a government confused about what is righteousness and unrighteousness, has a vested financial interest in the “common good,” or lacks the discernment to analyze the marketplace appropriately, you have a government in desperate need of the prayers and participation of the remnant (1 Timothy 2:1-2, Romans 13:1-7).

1.2 Trillion Spending Bill
President Biden signed a $1.2 trillion government spending bill, averting a shutdown and ending a prolonged spending dispute. The bill, approved by the Senate in a 74-24 vote, fully funds government operations until September. Senate negotiations ran past the deadline due to disagreements over amendments. The legislation encompasses six spending bills, covering departments such as State, Homeland Security, and Defense. Its passage allows Congress to focus on other priorities, but it also highlights divisions within the Republican party, with House Speaker Mike Johnson facing criticism from conservatives. Despite mixed reactions, the bill includes funding for various programs, such as education and border security.
Avoiding the shutdown of our government can lead to a collective sigh of relief, but we must heed biblical wisdom on fiscal responsibility. As Proverbs 22:7 warns, "The borrower is slave to the lender." Our nation's leaders must reckon with the ethical (and practical) implications of accumulating debt with no intention of paying it back (Psalm 37:21). Delaying consequences only prolongs the inevitable encounter with them. The remnant should faithfully advocate for our leaders to prioritize stewardship and not let them embrace temporary relief instead of lasting solutions. American legislators and their complicit citizens are mocking realities that will eventually prove themselves (Galatians 6:9). A government that doesn't shut down foolish fiscal and fleshly practices will eventually experience a shutdown that is more than temporary.
