Bridge Collapse, P Diddy Raid, US and Israel Cease-Fire Clash

March 27, 2024

We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us: we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be.

C.S. Lewis

Bridge Falls in Baltimore

A massive cargo ship lost power and collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River; at least 20 vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. Six construction workers repairing the bridge at the time are presumed dead. The incident, described as an "unthinkable tragedy," prompted a massive response from local and federal authorities, with President Biden pledging federal support for rebuilding efforts. Investigations into the cause of the collision and the condition of the bridge are ongoing.

Almost as soon as the reports of the tragedy in Baltimore hit the news, speculations and “conspiracies” about the reason for the bridge’s collapse followed. One of the main purposes of the Remnant News is to give readers certainty in the midst of a constant barrage of news stories, many of which have quickly shifting narratives surrounding them that are impossible for us to verify or deny. The battle man has faced from the very beginning is the battle to know and maintain allegiance to the Truth (Genesis 3:1-7). We have an enemy who lives to lie, who has been a murderer of Truth and a liar from the beginning (John 8:44).

The prudent remnant (Proverbs 22:3) knows to be slow to respond to “breaking news” and quick to reflect on what we do know (Proverbs 30:5-6), not what we might know because of what we just heard or read (Proverbs 19:2). The wise know the best “reporters” have biases and the most well-meaning witness can be mistaken. Prudence and careful discernment are always the companions of the wise (Proverbs 18:17), especially given that in our fallen world, there are many who intentionally spread lies and distort the truth in order to further a narrative, advance deceptive ideologies (Colossians 2:8), and capture the weak-minded (2 Timothy 3:6). Today with the rapid advancements in technology, even what we “see” and “hear” needs to be carefully evaluated.

The battle has always been and will forever be a battle for what is true.

  • Bridges (like towers) fall, and when they do, tragic and sudden death often follows (Luke 13:4).

  • None of us should presume that tragedy or sudden death will not befall us (James 4:13-16).

  • It is appointed for man to die once, and after this comes judgment (Hebrews 9:27, Luke 13:5).

  • Only the righteous will stand at the judgment (Psalm 1:5).

  • There is no human who is righteous, not even one (Romans 3:10).

  • ”There is salvation in no one else, and there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12).

  • “Therefore, let everyone who is godly pray to the Lord in a time when He may be found” (Psalm 32:6).

  • God has promised forgiveness for our repentance but not tomorrow for our procrastination (1 Corinthians 6:2).

  • Those of us who know the above truths are expected to share them with everybody every chance we get (Romans 1:16, 10:14).

P Diddy’s Properties Raided

Federal Homeland Security raided properties linked to rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a sex trafficking investigation. Although not confirmed as the primary target, Combs faces allegations of sexual coercion and abuse, including rape accusations from his former protege, Cassie. Combs denies all claims. Law enforcement's heavy presence underscores the seriousness of the investigation, with ongoing actions supported by local authorities. According to reports, Combs' private jet traveled to the Caribbean amid the raids.

A person's words reflect the contents of their heart - goodness or evil (Luke 6:45). If you listen to Combs' albums (which we don't necessarily recommend), you won't find "speech seasoned with salt" or praise being given to a Creator. Instead, you'll find a man who often praises himself, "worships" creation, and projects a life of self-satisfaction unmoored from gospel ethics – sometimes, and sadly, in this instance, "art" apparently does imitate life.

This presents a good opportunity for the remnant to look into our own hearts and do some self-examination: "What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" (Mark 8:36). Scripture teaches that riches in this present world can lead to putting our hope in wealth, and commands us to rather put our hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment (1 Timothy 6:17-19).

Worldly fame and fleeting success do not protect a man from judgment (Psalm 37:1-2), only the blood of Christ is sufficient for that task (Hebrews 10:12-14). May justice be delivered to all involved, healing be granted to those abused, and let us fervently pray for the guidance of those who do not yet know Jesus, that they may be led to Him through the compassion of those who do (Psalm 147:3).

Israel and US Clash over Vote

The United States abstained from a United Nations Security Council vote demanding a cease-fire in Gaza, sparking tension with Israel, which canceled a high-level delegation's visit to Washington. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the U.S., accusing it of weakening its stance by not vetoing the vote instead of abstaining. White House spokesman John Kirby expressed confusion over Netanyahu's reaction, stating the U.S. abstained because the resolution didn't condemn Hamas. The resolution, which passed 14-0, calls for a temporary cease-fire during Ramadan but doesn't condition it on the release of hostages.

Please read this Remnant Response that makes the biblical case for Israel's right to respond with finality to Hamas' continued terror.

When evil has been consistently committed and perpetrated, as it has for decades in acts of terror against Israel, there comes a time for talking to stop. Israel has tried to live peacefully with its neighbors in spite of many making bold declarations that they are committed to Israel's destruction. It has been rightly said, if Hamas laid down its guns there would be no war, if Israel laid down its guns, there would be no Israel. While efforts to peaceably come to a resolution should always be sought, there are innocent people suffering, and where concessions are made with the wicked, greater wickedness is likely to be found (Ecclesiastes 8:11). If it is true that this administration abstained from the vote because of the resolution’s failure to condemn Hamas, they should have been clear in their messaging before creating confusion with Israel and other nations and leaders (Isaiah 9:6). Let us remember that Israel is willing to cease-fire on the condition of the release of their citizens, while Hamas is committed to the genocide of the Jews, no matter how long it takes.
