Memorial Day

May 27, 2024

Happy Memorial Day from the Remnant News Team.

Today is more than an occasion to hang at the lake and take off from work; it is a solemn opportunity to honor and remember the 1.3 million men and women who sacrificed their lives in service to our nation.

As with nearly everything, from a biblical worldview, this day takes on even deeper significance. The ultimate act of love and sacrifice is epitomized in Jesus Christ, who laid down His life for humanity: "Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). And what Jesus did was not merely for friends nor countrymen, it was for enemies and sinners (Romans 5:8, 10). As we honor those who sacrificed their lives for our country, our minds should consider the Sacrifice to which all sacrifices point (1 John 3:16).

Freedom is a profound gift, hard-won and kept by the valiant efforts of our armed forces. Yet, while the freedom from oppressive governance is invaluable, the freedom from the bondage of sin is immeasurable. The Apostle Paul reminds us, "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery" (Galatians 5:1). True liberty transcends political circumstances, grounding itself in the redemptive work of Christ, who frees us from the ultimate tyranny of sin and death (John 8:36).

"All gave some; some gave all." While we extend our appreciation to all who have served and are serving, this day, we remember those who sacrificed their all on our behalf. As we commemorate Memorial Day, let us do so with hearts full of gratitude and reverence, inspired to live lives worthy of the freedoms we enjoy, mindful of the greatest sacrifice made for our salvation, and ever hopeful for the eternal peace promised in Christ.
