Pornography Accountability?

House Speaker Mike Johnson has recently attracted attention for his use of the Covenant Eyes app, which aims to assist individuals in overcoming pornography addiction. A year-old video surfaced online, revealing Johnson discussing his use of the app to monitor his and his son's online activities.

The clip, reportedly recorded at a "War on Technology" event hosted by the Cypress Baptist Church in Louisiana in October of 2022, shows Johnson endorsing Covenant Eyes as a long-standing tool used in their household.

Johnson clarified that he and his son exchange weekly reports of their online activities via Covenant Eyes. While there is no indication that Johnson struggles with pornography addiction, the revelation has caused some outlets to question his online privacy and security as a government official. Additionally, many of these same outlets have called his use of the accountability software "weird."

Johnson has long emphasized his Christian faith, making it a fundamental part of his political career.

The Remnant's Response

The cultural attacks of “weirdness” tied to Mike Johnson within this story is an outstanding example of the truth of John 3. “The light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God” (John 3:19-21).

Those consistently walking in the darkness of “wicked things” cannot “comprehend” the light of truth when they are confronted with it (John 1:5). Mike Johnson’s willingness to adopt practices that will encourage personal holiness in his life and the life of his son is unsurprisingly mocked by those whose eyes are darkened by a worldview that delights in the things of this world (1 John 2:15-16). Wise men flee immorality and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace with those who call on God with a pure heart” (2 Timothy 2:22), but fools mock at sin (Proverbs 14:9).

We can be thankful that we have this kind of man elevated by the sovereignty of God to a position of leadership and influence in our land (Proverbs 29:2). Stop and pray for Speaker Johnson, and then imitate him as he models faithfulness and wisdom in his example of not wanting “immorality or impurity” to even “be named among” his family (Ephesians 5:1-3).

Nashville Shooter Manifesto

Podcaster, Steven Crowder has unveiled a diary attributed to the Nashville shooter who tragically claimed the lives of 3 children and 3 adults at the Covenant School in Nashville last March. The diary revealed intense racial animosity towards white people and further disdain aimed at their "privilege." The writings of the shooter reflect resentment towards what they view as a dominant and privileged society.

Despite an initial promise to release a manifesto explaining the shooter's motives, the Nashville police department has not done so, citing various reasons, including ongoing investigations and potential trauma to the victims' families. The FBI's handling of the case also raised questions, as the attack targeted white children based on their race and was not classified as a hate crime. Access to the records by legislators and the governor remain limited.

At this time the authenticity of the shooter’s diary pages has been confirmed by sources at the Daily Wire and Steven Crowder’s team.

The Remnant's Response

We have written before the concept of "hate crimes" is an invention of man. God hates everything that hurts His people (Proverbs 6:16-19), and the Lord makes it clear that in His eyes, even speaking hateful words to a fellow image bearer is akin to murder (Matthew 5:21-22). But if we as a society are going to 'level up' crimes because of an articulated disdain for others, we need to do it "without hypocrisy" (James 3:17). Yet a cursory review of recent crimes shows a discernible inconsistency in our justice systems labeling and determining what information and 'manifestos' are released and which ones are not. Some murderous acts are highlighted, widely reported on, and exploited for political advantage, while others are seemingly swept away as fast as possible.

If we had a media free from bias and a truly just justice system, this act would also be labeled a "hate crime" because the transgender shooter targeted a Christian school with a "majority white" population that she expressed disdain for.

Students of God's word know intrinsic worth and value is embedded in every human made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). They know every son of Adam and daughter of Eve, irrespective of skin color or class, has been tainted by sin (Romans 6:23a). Tragically, worldly philosophies like critical race theory, which are born from an atheistic and Marxist worldview, find their footing in the hearts of men, leading us to focus on things which divide us as opposed to how we have been redeemed together by a common Savior. When we identify ourselves as minority/majority or oppressed/oppressor groups based on markers like skin color, social or sexual preferences, gender, or financial status, we soon will find justification to organize and mistreat any and everyone that we identify as part of the majority oppressor party. Sometimes, like we recently have seen in Nashville, with deadly consequences. This flies in the face of the Scriptures' admonition to let each man's work stand on his own (Ezekiel 18:1-22). The remnant must reject the divisive world created by identity politics and intersectionality (Colossians 2:8) and call others to return to "the ancient paths, where the good way is, so that they may walk in it (Jeremiah 6:16). Meanwhile, it appears, if the first few excerpts are proven to be authentic and not contradicted by other entries in the diary, that the Nashville shooter was one such negatively affected individual.

There is a reason the Lord tells us to "Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you" (Ephesians 4:31-32) because murderous hateful thoughts lead to murderous hateful actions. The old saying is true, "Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny." The thoughts of too many Americans are being poisoned with atheistic and demonic ideas. And as we have noted before, ideas have consequences, and bad ideas have victims. The first victims are the mentally ill who embrace the bad ideas, and the next victims are those who suffer as a result of their deceived and corrupted minds. If our world does not forsake the deceptive philosophies of the age and find transformation "by the renewing of their mind" (Romans 12:2), we will continue to experience more death instead of the good, acceptable, and perfect way our gracious God intends for us.

While we wait for that day, let us not forget the families that are undoubtedly still mourning the loss of their loved ones from this heinous act. Continue praying for the Covenant Nashville community and share the hope, love, and truth of Christ's power to transform all who don't know Him (Matthew 28:19-20).
