Election Updates, Israel Strikes Iran

“Men’s neglect of God’s commands in smaller matters often leads to their disobedience in greater matters.”

Matthew Henry

Election Updates

Media Endorsements

  • The Washington Post announced it would not endorse a candidate in this year's presidential election, marking the first time in 36 years and indicating a shift away from future endorsements. WaPo CEO and publisher William Lewis stated that this decision reflects a return to the newspaper's roots of non-endorsement, prioritizing the autonomy of readers in making their own electoral choices. This move has been met with swift backlash from subscribers, political figures, and even Post columnists like Robert Kagan, who resigned in protest.

  • Similarly, the Los Angeles Times encountered controversy when owner Patrick Soon-Shiong blocked a planned endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, resulting in the resignation of its editorials editor. These decisions have ignited significant debate about the role of major newspapers in shaping political discourse.

Judge Blocks Expedited Noncitizen Program

  • In Virginia, a federal judge temporarily blocked the state’s expedited program to remove noncitizens from voter rolls, citing a violation of the National Voter Registration Act’s (NVRA) rule against systematic voter list updates within 90 days of an election. Governor Glenn Youngkin, who launched the program in August, plans to appeal the ruling. The judge expressed concern that eligible citizens could be mistakenly removed due to the program’s reliance on DMV data, which may incorrectly flag individuals as noncitizens.

5th Circuit Rules on Mail-In Ballots

  • The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Mississippi’s law allowing mail-in ballots postmarked by Election Day to be counted if they arrive later, citing that federal law requires ballots to be received by Election Day. The decision returns the issue to a lower court and aligns with Republican efforts in multiple states to disqualify ballots arriving post-Election Day. Democrats argue these challenges disregard modern voting needs, noting that removing grace periods disproportionately affects groups such as military personnel overseas and individuals with disabilities.

Media Endorsements

Does a media organization have a moral obligation to endorse a presidential candidate? The answer is no. Their primary responsibility lies in delivering factual news to their readership, and Scripture makes it clear that man has a duty to truth over opinions and preferences (Ephesians 4:25). Credit is due to the leadership at the LA Times and The Washington Post for making the unpopular choice against many of their subscribers' wishes (Proverbs 29:25).

The outrage from so many—even leaders within these media organizations— reveals a truth found in God's Word: when left to our own devices, we abandon principled wisdom, sound practices, and truth in favor of what our itching ears want to hear (2 Timothy 4:3-4)."

This shift challenges each of us to consider what we truly endorse in our own lives (2 Corinthians 13:5). The remnant's focus should be on enthusiastically endorsing principles, not parties; righteousness, not Republicans; doctrine, not Democrats; justice, not justices (Psalm 37:3; Exodus 20:3-4).

At The Remnant News, we hope to prioritize God's Word over everything else (Matthew 4:4). May every thought of ours be held captive and made obedient to Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). Our hope is to be faithful over favored by man, and boldly proclaim truth in a world that often compromises it (Galatians 1:10, Ephesians 6:19-20).

Election Integrity

Fairness, integrity, accountability, responsibility, and impartiality are critical in the Bible’s perspective on governance and law (Proverbs 16:11, Leviticus 19:15, Proverbs 29:2). Enforcing election law is almost as difficult and nuanced as understanding it, but it is a desperately important cause. As our nation suffers under the influence of corruption and the brokenness that afflicts the whole world (Romans 8:20-22), we rest easy, knowing that there is no authority except that which God has established (Romans 13:1).

Israel Strikes Iran

On Friday, Israel launched its largest-ever airstrike against Iran, responding to a recent missile attack on Israel by the Islamic Republic. Israeli media reported that 140 Air Force planes targeted several Iranian military sites, including facilities involved in missile exports, drones, ballistic missile systems, missile fuel, and air defense networks. Before the assault, Israel warned Iran about the forthcoming response, describing it as proportional and cautioning the Iranian leadership against any retaliation.

As we witness the ongoing conflict between Israel and neighboring Muslim nations, we can take comfort in knowing that Israel's future rests securely in God's hands. He promised Israel the land stretching from the Mediterranean in the west to the Euphrates River in the east and from the Nile in the south to Lebanon in the north (Genesis 15:18, Joshua 1:4). While Israel has yet to fully occupy all of this territory, God's promises remain unshakable despite its enemies' attempts.

Throughout history, God has preserved a remnant of Israel in the land surrounding Jerusalem, even gathering His people back after nearly 1,900 years of global dispersion (Deuteronomy 30:4-5). He assures us that as long as the sun rises by day and the moon and stars by night, Israel will endure as a nation (Jeremiah 31:35-37), and the land He promised will be theirs forever (Genesis 13:15). The Iranian regime knows well the extent of this Promised Land and remains committed to destroying Israel as both a nation and a people before that promise is fulfilledIsrael'sl rightly defends itself against such efforts.
