Shroud of Turin, Conservative Parents are Happier, Tyreek Hill in Trouble

“Courage is not a momentary surge of adrenaline—it’s a lifestyle of daily obedience to God’s call.”

Shroud of Turin

A new study by Italian scientists suggests the Shroud of Turin could be 2,000 years old, potentially linking it to Jesus Christ's burial cloth. The cloth bears the image of a crucified man with wounds consistent with Jesus' death, including nail marks and a side wound (John 19:34). This challenges a controversial 1980s study that dated the Shroud to medieval times. Using X-ray analysis, researchers found the linen's fibers aged slowly, indicating most degradation occurred before the 1300s. However, the study doesn't confirm it was Jesus' burial cloth and highlights the need for further evidence to verify its preservation conditions over the centuries. A more systematic analysis of additional samples is necessary for a definitive conclusion.

While the debate continues over whether or not the Shroud of Turin is Jesus' burial cloth, Scripture teaches that God has already revealed Himself in far more profound ways: through creation (Romans 1:20), through His Son (Hebrews 1:3), through His Word (2 Timothy 3:16), and today through how we love one another (John 13:34-35).

This story of the "shroud," while intriguing, is a great opportunity to remind ourselves that the righteous life by faith, not relics (2 Corinthians 5:7). Faith is about trusting in the One who holds all things, the seen and unseen, together (Hebrews 11:1, Colossians 1:17). Yet, God graciously grounds our faith in real history and events. Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God and the second person of the Trinity lived a real life, died a real death, and truly rose from the grave (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) where hundreds of eyewitnesses testified of His resurrection, whose lives were radically changed through which the gospel has gone forth throughout the world even to this day (Acts 4:12-13, Matthew 16:18).

Too often we ask God to send signs, but He has already done "far more abundantly than all we ask" (Ephesians 3:20)—He sent His Son (John 3:16) through the cross and reconciled us to the Father (1 Peter 3:18) and gave us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7) all of which are exceedingly more the source of our assurance than what may be found in the preservation of a burial cloth. Whatever is being declared as authentic in Italy, it will forever pale in comparison to the power of the testimony of the remnant who obediently wrap themselves in "the likeness of God,” walking in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). Sinful men who begin to walk in righteousness will always speak more to the reality of Christ's life-giving death than his death shroud. May His image in you be boldly imprinted on you today.

Tyreek Hill in Trouble

Tyreek Hill, wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was detained by Miami-Dade Police near Hard Rock Stadium on September 8, 2024, for reckless driving before a game. Hill caused the incident to go south when he chose to roll up his car window, began ignoring the officer's commands, and no doubt escalated the intensity of the encounter. The officers responded by forcibly removing Hill from his vehicle, placing him face-down on the ground, and handcuffing him. Hill was briefly detained but ultimately not arrested. This action was taken after Hill was clocked for reckless driving 105mph in a 55mph zone, endangering lives in flagrant violation of the posted speed limit. The Dolphins condemned the police's use of force, and one officer involved was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation to determine whether he followed training protocol. Public and institutional reactions were mixed, with discussions focusing on police conduct and racial profiling. Hill played later that day, contributing to the Dolphins' victory against the Jaguars. The Miami-Dade Police released bodycam footage, prompting further scrutiny and debate over the incident.

Tyreek Hill’s incident with Miami-Dade police officers has been widely debated by a watching public, and much of the commentary has been just as tragic as the incident itself. Although the Remnant is not to judge whether or not someone is redeemed based on select incidents (Matthew 7:1), we are to make judgments and discernments about whether or not specific behaviors are to be celebrated as positive (Matthew 7:16-20). We know the incident initially stemmed from Tyreek’s disregard for the law and authority, eventually leading to the conflict that, unfortunately, could have been avoided by heeding man’s laws and God’s Word (Psalm 1:1-2, Romans 12:18; 13:1-2). The Bible illuminates a poignant truth that the source of all conflict is self-seeking behavior or self-centeredness (James 4:1-2). That concept was fully displayed as Hill seemingly expected to be treated differently because of his status (James 2:1-4). Hill further revealed his heart condition in both his words to the officers (Matthew 12:34) and his refusal to comply with their requests. All of this behavior we can safely categorize, at best, as selfish or self-seeking, and led to more strife and chaos—the ripple effects of which metastatically echoed through society in the form of divisive discussions around racism and police brutality. The Enemy no doubt intends to use this incident and ones like it to further divide and destroy our society and any unity we do seek (John 10:10, 2 Corinthians 2:11). Until a man comes to learn that he is dead in his trespasses (Ephesians 2:3), we can expect more run-ins with the law, and tragically this not Hill’s first run-in with the law. If this man is a tree, we are not seeing good fruit. Only when such a man accepts the grace offered by God can we expect to see a transformation from societally destructive behavior to the life-giving kind (Ephesians 2:8-9; 2 Corinthians 5:17, 1 Corinthians 15:45). The Remnant should also raise a collective eyebrow when we observe the NFL’s response to Harrison Butker’s commencement speech contrasted with the NFL’s response to Hill’s traffic violation, the former being met with the NFL’s dissociation from Harrison’s worldview and the latter being met with the NFL’s condemnation of Miami-Dade’s police department response to reckless, illegal actions. So, while we may look to the NFL on Sundays for some temporary entertainment, we should focus every day on God’s truth for eternal instruction and encouragement (John 15:19, Jeremiah 6:16).

Conservative Parents are Happier

University of Virginia Professor Brad Wilcox posted a thread on X that examined the differences in happiness between liberal and conservative parents. Wilcox presented numerous studies indicating that conservative parents are generally happier and have better relationships with their children. Additionally, he referenced a study showing that religious parents are significantly happier than non-religious parents.

While generalizations are often dangerously made (and there are exceptions to every “rule”), something in the data collected and shared by Professor Wilcox is worth observing. It should be no surprise that families who vote or identify with an aim to “conserve a Judeo-Christian” ethic, lifestyle, and values system experience statistically more happiness, less stress, and closer relationships with their children. While there are many historical, anthropological, and psychological ways this could be analyzed and supported, we need not look further than the Scriptures, which guarantee a life where your contentment (Philippians 4:11-13), joy (Psalm 16:11), and blessing is conserved and multiplied beyond measure (Ephesians 6:3). To a watching world that tries to make sense of the hope that we have, we ought to be mothers, fathers, and friends that embody the blessing of walking the long-preserved ancient path where life is (Jeremiah 6:16).
